Golfing in Portugal with Byron Easterling

What better place to experience captivating golf courses and an IVHE luxury home exchange than Portugal.
I was fortunate to interview professional golfer and former tour player, Byron Easterling, who frequented Portugal while pursuing the European SPGA tour.  The qualifying school for the senior tour was held at Pestana Resort courses: Vila Sol Golf, Pinta Golf, Silves Golf. Quinta do Lago and Pinheiros Altos Golf Resort.
Byron enthusiastically shared with me his fondness for the golf community in the Faro district in southern Portugal.  He says, “Faro is the main city.  You can see Algarve on the map, there’s a lot of golf courses in there.  People from all over Europe come to play.  It’s a hot spot for golfers, especially in the winter.”
Doesn’t surprise me that Byron has a liking for Portugal since there are some similarities between Faro and his hometown, Santa Barbara, California.  He explains, “It’s very temperate.  Same temperature all year.  Not a lot of fluctuation.”
The southern part of Portugal is adorned with breathtaking countryside, countless foothills, lots of palm trees and you’re continually close to the water.
Byron shares, “There’s that ocean feel on the golf courses, not necessarily links, it’s that you’re never more than 20 minutes from the water. Portugal has exquisite sunsets, thanks to its ocean surroundings.  I’d catch them in the evenings when I’d be at the range practicing.”
Southern Portugal is known for their community vibe, warmly welcoming visitors.  With the added bonus of the senior tour qualifying rounds being held in the area, the Portuguese communities embrace these golf tournaments as part of their cultural society.  “I made great relationships with non-participants”, reminisces Byron.
Quaint streets uphold the famous small town European cobblestone flare, with pedestrians and bicyclists enjoying leisurely promenades.
Yah but ,what about food? Ok ok, I’ll get to the yummy part!
Byron shares, “My favourite choice of beverage is wine which they have both local and international wines available. And of course Port, a great way to finish a meal.  Their port wines are very good.”
The restaurants are a collection of diverse culture, a flavor of European cuisine.  Inviting patios and stunning marinas contribute to an irresistible atmosphere.  Right off the bay area, close to the boats and docks, are numerous restaurants and pubs to choose from.
“I enjoyed going to a British pub to watch the soccer game, have a good beer and eat fish and chips.  My caddy and I also found an Italian restaurant where their wines and food were marvelous!” Byron adds, “You’d sit in these places and sure enough people from various different countries would show up, coming down for golf tours to play together with friends and families. We’d end up enjoying festive evenings with great people; people from all over the world!”
Of course, we must not forget the friendly cafés and delicious specialty coffees.  Byron had a routine: “I had a café after every round.  I’d hang by myself.  They got to know me on the waterfront.  I’d have a coffee and a pastry and sit and do emails and catch up and chat with the locals.”
I asked Byron why he’d encourage people to vacation in Southern Portugal.  He says, “The culture and the atmosphere are so inviting and the people are very warm and of course the courses are great.  Really good golf courses.  People need to go just to experience the atmosphere.”
And which golf courses do you recommend, Byron?  “Karen, I’d promote all the golf courses”, he states confidently.
He adds, “There’s a real honour there amongst the golfers.  And they really do honour good golf.  They welcome everyone and anybody to play.  They make it fun.  They really do make it fun there.”

Thanks Byron for the inspiration.  I think Portugal is calling my name…

Home of modern golf - Scotland

I have a soft spot for Scotland.  I’ve been a few times.  And each experience in my travels has been, well, it’s been life-giving.  That’s the best word to describe Scotland.

Its oceans, cliffs, lakes, mountains, highways, forests, ancient ruins, cities, pubs, restaurants, music, art – this is the canvas for you to experience rich history, romantic culture and cheerful celebration.

If you’re looking to golf, there’s many to choose from and none of which will disappoint you!  I’d like to hi-light the famous St Andrews Links and Edinburgh’s Braid Hills Golf Course.

As most are aware, St Andrews is the mecca for golfers; the birthplace of the greatest sport on this planet.  And one of the oldest golf courses in the world.  Book a tee time to play this legendary links and soak in its antiquity.

The city is filled with tucked-away restaurants and around every corner is another piece of Scotland’s story.  The beaches and narrow cobble streets invite you to spend most of your time outdoors.  And the evening will welcome you to live music at a pub for a pint and meat pie.

And while there, take the short drive to Stirling (my favourite Scotland city) and Edinburgh.  I was new to golf when I played Braid Hills in Edinburgh.  What a stunning course.  Beautiful course!  (We won’t talk about my game.  It was horrible.)  The views are breathtaking.  Along with the ocean that you can see from the tee box, the Edinburgh castle is majestically keeping watch over you too.

Edinburgh welcomes you with art, music, the blend of old and new architecture; from nostalgic pubs to intimate restaurants, from rich past to metropolitan present – there is a gift waiting for anyone who visits.

The Scots are brilliant at storytelling their world.  It’s a unique country where you leave not only loving the landscape, but the people too.

Bear to golf in Whistler?

This is the third in a series of British Columbia golfing from our guest blogger, golf fanatic and business coach, Karen Thrall, enjoy!

Whistler, British Columbia is considered one of the greatest year-round resort destinations worldwide.  There’s a good reason for its reputation.  From mountain, forest and water activities to scenic trails for hiking and cycling; various extreme adventures to push your boundaries; and every outdoor sport imaginable, you will love the Whistler experience.  What do you feel like doing while you’re in Whistler?  Whatever you want.  Breathtaking views surround you.  You’ll also enjoy exceptional restaurants and boutiques; relaxing spas and poolside lounges (all year, even in the winter months); fun nightlife, great pubs and live performances; a friendly and engaging community, … and yes, golf! (saved the best one for last!).

Golf.  Oh, Whistler golf.  How I pine (no pun intended) after thee.  Three outstanding courses:  Whistler Golf Club, Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club and Nicklaus North Golf Course

I’ve played all three.  And enjoy all of them.  Each unique.  All challenging.  All scenic.  All representing British Columbia and the Whistler culture in their finest of ways.

I played in a fundraising tournament at Whistler Golf Club hosted by my good friend Matt Yasinchuk.  He organizes these Battle Of The Elements charitable tournaments every year.  It’s one of my favourites to attend.  Needless to say, we had a blast.  Prizes and winnings were generously distributed amongst the foursomes.  The beverages were a flowin’ and the food, delicious.  The staff at Whistler Golf helped our experience be unforgettable.  This is also one of the first golf courses I ever played when I was newly learning the game.  I highly recommend you grab a pull cart and walk it.  Soak in its surroundings and enjoy the evergreen lands.

I’ve enjoyed a few games at Chateau Whistler.  You’ll want to drive a golf cart: up and down rolling hills, with plenty of opportunity for panoramic photography.  They have excellent doglegs throughout the course design.  I may or may not have lost a few balls playing this course.  I do suggest the ball land in the fairway for every hole. But I’m sure your ball always lands in the fairway... it's probably just me that has that attraction to trees... J

And then there’s the legendary Nicklaus North.   One of my closest friends, professional snowboard photographer, Chad Chomlack, is a member at Nicklaus North.  Teeing off in the early morning, we talked golf for 4 hours.  (“C’mon Karen.  You didn’t really talk golf for four hours?!”)  - Oh yes we did, Invisible Cyber Voice.  We nerd out on golf and it’s magical.  J

Chad enjoys golfing with his two boys at Nicklaus North.  Both of these young lads are competitive snowboard enthusiasts.  Chad believes that the golf culture is a great place for his sons to learn the etiquettes of being gentlemanly; and how golf teaches his boys the art of the mental game as well as learning how to manage your plays on the course.  The skills they learn through golf are transferrable to their passions in the extreme sports culture.  He strongly believes that golf is one of the greatest ways to build a father bond with his children.

Enjoy Whistler, and what better way than a home exchange vacation and golfing!

And don’t be alarmed if one of these little bear cuties wants to join your foursome.  The golf marshals and forest rangers take good care of you.  Get your camera out and enjoy BC’s captivating wildlife.

Golfing while watching the earth move! Big Sky in British Columbia

Self-proclaimed golf nut, Karen Thrall, our guest blogger, shares with us her experience near Whistler Canada.  For luxury exchange properties nearby visit British Columbia, Canada or for more great golf locations visit IVHE.com’s golf pages.

My good friend and I made the commute to Big Sky Golf Club in Pemberton, British Columbia.  It’s one of his favourite courses, so it was a perfect place to celebrate his birthday!  (I wish I could tell you I “let” the birthday boy win, but his 4 handicap was leading the way…again.)

We witnessed two avalanches while playing.  It’s magnificent to watch the roaring of the snow breaking free from the mountains, pouring down the crevices of the cliffs.  Loud, powerful – stunning!

What a place!  One of the most beautiful courses I've played.  By far, one of BC's best golf havens.  The tranquility and splendour of its surroundings is remarkable.  The snow-capped mountains are your backdrop, towering over you.  Breathtaking.  While you’re visiting Whistler, go experience Big Sky!!  (Maybe I should add a few more exclamation marks for dramatic effect?)

From downtown Vancouver, it’s a 2 hour drive; 30 minutes north of Whistler, BC.  The commute alone is well worth the trip.  Crank up the tunes and cruise this spectacular scenic route.  A memorable golf day awaits you.  As Dorothy so famously coined, “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore…”  You’re right Dorothy, you’re in Big Sky!

The course is challenging enough to test your course management skills.  If you’re able to, I highly recommend you take a pull cart and walk the lands.  This way, you’ll soak in more of its attractive features.  I do remember in this particular game, my back nine played better than my front nine.  Took me the front nine to hit my groove.

Excellent customer service is another prime reason to go.  You’ll be warmly welcomed, the staff are helpful and always a pleasure to interact with.

I’ll tell you about the other Whistler courses in a different blog post.  Big Sky gets singled out and deserves its own spotlight.  The locals will tell you the same thing.  It’s well worth the extra 30-minute drive north.  You won’t be disappointed.  Guaranteed.

Promise me you’ll have one day scheduled for Big Sky.  Let me know what you think.  And let me know how you played!
